Blog - Week Ending 18th September

Well the end to a second busy and full week and I am full of admiration for how well the children have adapted to the COVID safe procedures that are in place and would like to thank the parents for helping with this at drop off and collection times too. The unseasonal weather has meant plenty of outdoor sports with Mr Ferris and it has been great to see the children enjoying themselves playing tennis, hockey and doing archery as our clubs have restarted.

Many of the Prep 6 children today took the entrance exam for St Joseph’s college and proved excellent ambassadors for the school not to mention being confident about the results - “Mr Hood I am 100% positive I got 100% right!” Now starts the hard part waiting for the results! We wish all Prep 6 success in these and the various other entrance tests over the coming weeks.

Our first parents evening is calendared for the week prior to half term (Tuesday 20th / Thursday 22nd) and along with Harvest, Carol Services and Prep 4’s assembly will no doubt need the format altering to ensure all our school family stay as safe as possible, and I will be writing to you over the coming weeks to keep you posted on any changes.

A lesson I had with Prep 5 this week gave me pause to think about our school motto “faith and knowledge”. We have started a topic on cryptography and the children were trying to send signals using semaphore. One child asked why we needed to learn this and it led to a discussion of the purpose of education, that school is not just a place to cram knowledge but a place to learn attitudes, values and beliefs, and to have the faith in those beliefs to put that knowledge to good use. Seeing the passion of our pupils, I am sure in the future they will.
