The Government in England wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) launched their Sustainable Schools Framework in 2006 when the Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP set out challenging long-term aspirations for schools to mainstream learning about sustainable development issues and sustainable practices into everyday school life.
Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life. We have place old tyres in our allotment to be used as planters. We are also recording our energy usage to analyze this and to make savings where possible.
On Friday 23rd April, St. Joseph's Preparatory School took part in the City wide 'The Big Clean Up' with Mrs Hutchinson and Eco Warrier volunteers litter picking around the school grounds. We also raised awareness in school about keeping our environment litter free. Please remember to put your rubbish in a bin, recycling it if possible.
Pictured are Nathan and Mrs Hutchinson with their litter bag.
St. Joseph's Preparatory School joined in with WWF's Earth Hour (a day early) on Friday 26th March 2010 during assembly. We switched off everything electrical and the theme of our assembly was responsibility to our planet. The world-wide "switch-off" was on Saturday 27th March 2010 from 8.30pm until 9.30pm. For more information visit earthhour.wwf.org.uk.
We have registered to take part in the British Gas Generation Green programme, designed to encourage pupils, their parents and wider community to become more aware and go green. Leaves are earned for every green task completed, and the more friends and family who get involved the quicker the school will be able to achieve its Leaf Goal and trade Leaves for some of the great rewards available.

The Eco-team meet regularly and have representatives from every class from Reception upwards. We are supported by interested Governors and Parents.
This year we are continuing to remind all the school about energy saving and are making sure that no lights are left on unnecessarily and no taps left dripping. We are also thinking about recycling; as well as recycling our paper, we have purchased special bags to recycle plastic and compost bins for peel and skins from our healthy snacks at breaktime.
Our latest project is a fair trade stall which the Eco-teams open on a Friday, both at breaktime and after school to encourage parents to get involved. We are trying to help everyone think about fair trading, our sustainable world and Eco-justice. Our shop opened for the first time on November 14th and was so successful that we had to replenish our stocks straight away.
Do you have any ideas about how we could be more Eco-friendly?
If so then speak to your class Eco-monitor and let us know!
