Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we celebrate the Lunar New Year and welcome in the Year of the Dragon, I would like to express my best wishes to all Chinese Singaporeans that this feast may bring about happiness and joy for you and your families.
Joy is an expression of being in harmony with ourselves. To truly be in harmony with ourselves, we must also be in harmony with God, with others and with nature.
The dragon is a symbol of power and good fortune. As we welcome the Year of the Dragon, let us share our success with those less fortunate and use our “power” to look beyond our own needs and serve the greater good.
This year, let us focus on honouring God through respect for His Creation, respect for the dignity of the human person and the life of the unborn child.
In addition, let us offer together our prayers for the Church in China that Chinese Catholics may be witnesses to the love that Jesus has shown us.
Wishing you all a joy-filled Chinese New Year!
Yours in Christ
Archbishop Nicholas Chia
Over the past few days we have been following the Youth Olympics where Jasmine Sawyers - a former pupil is currently competing in the Bobsleigh Competition. through the merits of Our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of His blessed Mother. Amen.
The School is now looking very Christmassy; this is down to a hard working band of Mums and Dads who came to decorate the school on Friday. Our thanks go to them and to Trentham Gardens for the kind donation of our Christmas tree. We also have a lovely Advent wreath for our Advent display provided as usual by “Exhibits” of Newcastle.
The Prep enjoyed a morning out at the New Vic Theatre on Friday to see “Alice in Wonderland “; we always enjoy our annual trip to the theatre.

Everyone is now busy preparing for Christmas – Winter Wonderland in the Nursery is taking shape and I have heard some beautiful Christmas songs being sung around school.
Perhaps parents have noticed that Rookery Lane parking is busier, this is because the College are having building work done and have lost parking spaces; so please take care when trying to park on Rookery Lane. This is likely to be the situation for the foreseeable future.

The gymnasts then went on to have a real treat on Friday when they went to spectate at the National Tumbling Championship at the Birmingham Indoor arena.
The PTA organised a very enjoyable Ladies Evening at “The Arch” in Newcastle on Sunday evening. Thank you to all those who were responsible for the organisation of this, it was most enjoyable and raised funds for the PTA.
This week sees the beginning of “Switch Off “fortnight .We will be endeavouring to make a real effort to switch of unnecessary light and stop any taps from dripping. This will be an area for focus during assembly and I will be encouraging children to take the message home.

This week I am very busy showing prospective parents around the school. I am always happy to do this as the school family views every day as an Open Day and feel that we have much to show off and be proud of.
This week is National Anti-Bullying Week .We will be focussing on this topic during our assembly times and in PSHCE.
I have received a lot of information with regard to Anti Bullying; one useful piece of information has come from the NSPCC with regard to an APP that can be downloaded to stop youngsters receiving inappropriate calls on their mobile phones. Results and follow up will be available during Parents Evenings’ in March and in the end of term Spring Reports.
We begin this week in a romantic mood! We have a special school lunch for Valentine’s Day.
There were two Valentines, one was a Priest who lived in Rome in the third century and was executed by the Emperor Claudius. The other was a Bishop also executed by Claudius.
Neither seems to be anything to do with young love! Possibly the tradition springs from the fact that on this day in the northern hemisphere birds pair up with their mates.
Happy Valentine’s Day anyway!

"My True Love Hath My Heart and I Have His"
My true love hath my heart and I have his,
……By just exchange one for another given;
I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss,
……There never was a better bargain driven.
……….My true love has my heart and I have his.
His heart in me keeps him and me in one,
……My heart in him his thoughts and senses guides;
He loves my heart, for once it was his own,
……I cherish his, because in me it bides.
……….My true love hath my heart and I have his.

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us.
Amen.

Christmas Prayer of Pope John XXIII
O sweet Child of Bethlehem,
grant that we may share with all our hearts
in this profound mystery of Christmas.
Put into the hearts of men and women this peace
for which they sometimes seek so desperately
and which you alone can give to them.
Help them to know one another better,
and to live as brothers and sisters,
children of the same Father.
Reveal to them also your beauty, holiness and purity.
Awaken in their hearts
love and gratitude for your infinite goodness.
Join them all together in your love.
And give us your heavenly peace. Amen.
Pope John XXII

We had a busy week last week with the swimmers competing to a very high standard. Mr Ferris says that this was the best performance that we have ever put in. There were some super overall performances with our school being the smallest school to compete. We proudly came away in 3rd place in the Midlands region which is very commendable. Well done to all who took part. One pupil has been selected to represent the Midlands ISA Swimming Team at the National ISA Gala on Saturday 20th November . This is very good news.
Unfortunately the Ladies Evening scheduled for Sunday 14th November has had to be cancelled due to lack of numbers.

Please could we have them in for the end of the week; as yet we have got a small pile in school to send and would really like to be able to send some more. Leaflets are available from Mrs Pickford. It really is quite fun to do as well as bringing joy to a child less fortunate than our own.
Diary date: Tuesday 23rd November is P5 assembly. Parents welcome for a 3.00pm start in the school hall.
Thank you to all those children and families who attended the Autumn lights disco. We had a very enjoyable time.

Some staff will be receiving Fire Extinguisher training this week.
Please do not forget that we break up on Friday 22nd October for half term and that we return to school on Monday 1st November.
Remember that British Summer Time ends on 31st October. I notice in my diary that it is 'Halloween' the day before we return to school. This is not something which we encourage as a school as there seems to be enough darkness in the world these days. We reflect instead upon “Jesus the Light of the World” in all his goodness and hence our Autumn Light Disco on 4th November at 6.30 t0 8.00pm.
Do enjoy Half Term.
We had a lovely week last week when we celebrated our Harvest Festival. The Nursery, Reception and Pre-Prep donated beautiful harvest baskets which were later distributed to Age UK (previously Age Concern and Help the Aged). Children from PP1 to P6 went to celebrate Harvest Mass at St. Teresa's Church which was kindly led by Father Rob and attended by many parents. We were able to donate cheques to our charities from last year: The British Heart Foundation, The Christian Brothers, CAFOD and the Douglas Macmillan Home. We were pleased to welcome Dr Macarthy representing the Douglas Macmillan Home to personally receive their cheque. We hope that pictures of the event will appear in the "Evening Sentinel". Thank you for all your support of our charities.
The football teams were out last week and enjoyed the competition. The under-nines came in second place. Well done. The football teams are out again this Tuesday and we look forward to hearing about this.
We have Parents' Evenings this week with P6 on Monday evening and the rest of the school on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. This is an opportunity for parents to share with teachers how their child has settled thus far and find out what targets have been set for this term.
Don't forget that it is Bag2School on Wednesday. Mr Denson will be at the main gates to collect them as you drop off - black bin bags are fine if you have lots to donate. This is a really good fund raiser so please do support the PTA.
We are pleased to welcome Joe Andrews from CAFOD to lead our assembly on Friday to tell us about how some of the money we donate is used. Also, Reception class will have visual screening on Friday.
We look forward to another busy week.
Last week we had great fun with the conker championship. We had one winner, Jack, who used a fantastic conker kindly loaned to him by Ewan. Both boys received a prize. The conker championship proved so popular that we have extended to this week and are still playing!
The PTA met last week to discuss events for this academic year. A letter has gone home with regard to a proposed Ball. We would love to hold one but do need lots of support in order for it to go ahead. Please consider supporting the Spring Ball on March 12th 2011. The tickets are £35 each.
It is National Fire Safety week this week. We did hold a very successful fire practice last week and will be talking about fire safety in assembly. It is also Learn to Sign Week and, as Miss Grice is qualified in this area, we will be giving it a go.
The under 11 footballers are out playing 5-a-side on Tuesday.
We have our Harvest Thanksgiving on Thursday. Please could Nursery and Reception bring in produce in a harvest basket/box for an assembly in school at 9 am. Parents are most welcome. Prep and Pre-Prep will have a Harvest Mass at St Teresa’s Church at 2pm. Please could Prep children bring in envelopes containing money earned by small jobs they have undertaken and Pre-Prep children bring in produce in a harvest basket/box. Again parents are most welcome to attend. Representatives from some of our 2009/2010 charities will be attending to receive cheques and produce. We will be praying for those less fortunate than ourselves.
Last week was enjoyable in many respects. Miss Buttery and I went to Waterford and trod in the steps of Blessed Edmund Rice visiting the places where his vision to bring education to the poor became a reality. We visited his birth place in Callan and enjoyed a very peaceful Mass in the beautiful Chapel there. It was good to see the continuing work of the Christian Brothers who are working with Refugees at Waterford. It was a humbling experience and allowed us both to refocus on what makes our school such a special place based on that first prayerful vision of Edmund Rice.
On Friday we welcomed Penkfull Festival into the school to use us as a venue for a workshop with the Swingle Singers. What a wonderful musical afternoon it turned out to be and it was great to offer the school to the community. The event went smoothly thanks to excellent organisation from Mrs Sue Hallam and the help given by parents and friends of the school. I am sure that the Festival, which was organised by Greg Hallam, has given a lot of enjoyment to local music lovers.
Friday also saw many of our Prep 6 taking their entrance examination for St Joseph's College; we now await the results and pray for everyone involved.
The coming week sees the Book Fayre open after school until Tuesday afternoon. Do please go and browse and chose a book with your child.
Swimming for Prep 5 and 6 takes place again on Thursday.
Friday 1st October is our Harvest Fast Day for CAFOD. We ask that children do not bring their normal snack on this day as we provide a piece of bread to remind ourselves of those less fortunate who may only have a piece of bread to eat all day. We hope that you feel able to send in a donation for CAFOD and would suggest at least £1.
You might be interested that it is "National Wear a Tea Cosy on your Head Day" on Wednesday 29th September! I have mine at the ready!
Last Friday the Prep department made history by using i-player to link into the Pope’s “Big Assembly”. We discussed with the children what a momentous occasion this was and we all thoroughly enjoyed the “linkup”. The school family seemed to settle in really well last week. It was good to hear everyone's news and the children seemed pleased to be back. We had a minimum of tears from our little new starters; in fact, we had lots of happy faces.
Prep 6 soon took on their responsibilities. Our new Head boy is Nathan Ball and the Head girl is Isabel Gallimore. I know that both of these young people will take their roles seriously and be excellent ambassadors for the school.
Our focus for the first three days of term was on our International links. Some lovely work was achieved throughout the school. Prep 4 have already put up a very informative display about Germany with mention of the Holy Father and his imminent visit. Well done Prep 4.
Do keep the Papal visit in your prayers as he arrives on Thursday.(www.thepapalvisit.org.uk)

It was good to welcome so many parents to our Pre Prep prize giving on Monday.
On Tuesday and Wednesday we hosted Language mornings and invited the Year 5 classes from Oakhill and Weston Coyney Junior school to join us. Both mornings were a great success and we enjoyed sharing some French, Latin and Italian as well as a French breakfast with our friends.
We also enjoyed our Leavers' Mass at St Teresa's Church led by Father Rob. All our Prep 6 children received a Rosary which Father blessed.
The Nursery led a wonderful assembly on the theme of Noah's Ark on Thursday. This was followed by our Nursery and Reception Prize Giving. Parents took this opportunity to say goodbye to Mrs Gibbs.
On Friday, Prep 6 led their Leavers' Assembly where they remembered some of their best experiences at St Joseph's Prep.
The staff v P6 Rounders was a storming success - for the staff! Mr Dawes proved to be a very good player, Mr Ferris did some nifty moves including "moon walking" half way round, and I hit one over the fence but it only counted as half a rounder!
We waved good bye to Prep 6 as the limos arrived and they departed. Staff then had the opportunity to say thank you and good bye to Mrs Gibbs who has been at the school for twelve years.
Unfortunately, we no longer have a crossing patrol for September as the person withdrew before they started. Is there anyone out there interested? If so, please contact 01782 236464.
I hope that everyone has a good Summer break and that the sun shines - given that it has started to rain today!! The Holiday Club is running at the school on a daily basis.
A reminder that school opens for pupils on Wednesday 8th September.
We've now reached the last week of term.

Last week was very busy. We were fortunate to have dry weather for both Sports Days; the rain just about stayed away on Monday for the Prep Sports, whilst we had a hot sunny afternoon on Wednesday. Both events were well organised by Mr Ferris and a real sense of fun and enjoyment was apparent on both days. Pre Prep parents were the most adventurous and we had a very fast Dad's race and Mum's race. Congratulations to Harrison's and Ashton's Dad and Issy's Mum who were parent winners.
The E-safety talks were very informative but sadly the evening presentation was not well attended.
The sponsored skip went very well proving that all our practising had been worthwhile. I am not yet certain how much money we have raised for the British Heart Foundation.
The Family Fun Afternoon was very well supported; the weather was lovely and the atmosphere was one of fun and enjoyment. Everyone involved worked very hard - a big Thank You!! Mr Dawes was a very good sport and got drenched several times in "Drench the Teacher".

Thank you to everyone who came in non-uniform and donated bottles for our Tombola stall next week. We received lots of bottles. Thank you.
We did really well in the ISA Junior Athletics at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham last Thursday and came 3rd overall; given that we were up against all the top schools and athletes we performed to a high level. Elijah got through to the Nationals in Bedford. On top of all this I believe that the behaviour of our children was exemplary. Well done to all who took part.

On Friday it is our fund raising sponsored event for the British Heart foundation. Each child is encouraged to complete as many skips as they can - we have been practising! This is a very worthwhile cause and our charity giving is very much embedded in the ethos of our school. Thank you in advance for your support.
Also on Friday we are asking for any cake donations please for our FAMILY FUN EVENT and BBQ here at school on Saturday 19th June from 3-30pm. Prep 6, Miss Buttery, Mr Ferris and I had a most enjoyable time at Drayton Manor Park and Zoo. All the children were full of energy and had the opportunity to go on lots of different rides - so did Mr Ferris and Miss Buttery. What a pity Mrs Hutchinson had to be in charge of coats and bags!! We enjoyed looking around the zoo, and as usual there was much excitement when we saw the owls. The chimpanzee was much quieter than in previous years.

We break up for half term on Friday 28th May.
We had a lovely May Day procession and the weather was kind to us. P3 led the procession, with our First Holy Communion candidates taking the lead. P6 boys carried the statue of Our Lady bedecked with flowers. The rest of the school carried flowers which were placed around Our Lady during the Service. Mrs Bailey and Miss Oakes played violin and guitar to accompany our singing. Flowers were later taken to Douglas Macmillan Hospice by Mrs Gallimore, Isabel and Archie and Mrs Harding and Lewis.
Click here for PHOTOS of the procession.
The Governor/Staff Away day on Saturday provoked some very useful discussion following review of parental questionnaires. **Diary date for parents** I have booked a workshop for parents called: "Awareness Raising for Parents. Helping Children to Stay Safe in the Real and Virtual World." This should inform parents about cyber safety and use of the internet. It will be on 17th June at 7.15pm. Staff are concerned about this following discussion in PSCHE and discovering how many young people use social internet sites. We are holding an E-safety workshop for P3 to P6 on the same day.
Thank you to Father Rob and Prep 4 who led a very prayerful Blessed Edmund Rice Mass at St. Teresa's on Wednesday. Children, staff and parents who were there reflected on the importance of thinking about those less fortunate than ourselves and helping those who are in need, just as Edmund Rice did.

On Tuesday 11th May we have our May Day assembly led by Prep 3 at 9.30am (not 3pm - sincere apologies for previously posting the incorrect time). We will process around the school taking time at various points to pray and sing in honour of Our Lady. All the school are involved and each child is asked to bring in a small bunch of flowers to decorate the statue of Mary; these flowers will then go to the Douglas Macmillan Hospice.
On Friday 14th May Prep 6 will be going for their annual "P6 Day Out" to Drayton Manor Park and Zoo. This is being looked forward to by all in P6. Doubtless Mr Ferris and Miss Buttery will go on all the rides with everyone whilst Mrs H holds the coats (thank goodness!).

Last week, Mrs Hutchinson went on rugby training session with Mr Ferris to the rugby fields at NCHS the Science College, taking rugby players from P4 to P6. I didn't show my expertise, needless to say! This was readiness for our hosting of the ISA Tag Rugby and Netball tournaments on Tuesday 16th March and St Joseph's had a very good day. The Netballers gained a Silver medal and the Rugby players gained a Bronze medal. Well done everyone and thank you to all who took part for their hard work. I have discussed with the Rugby team whether or not their success could be attributed to the intervention of Mrs Hutchinson as time keeper during training?!
Staff are beginning to email reports this week and we hope that this trail works in order that we can become a more sustainable school. Any feedback is welcome.

There were lots of colourful picture's of Mums and lots of very thoughtful contributions as to why our Mums are special. A lot of love was shared and this is bound to continue on Sunday - so enjoy!
On Monday, Reception and Key Stage 1 went to St Teresa's Church and prayed the Stations of the Cross with Father Rob.
